On to the next!

aaaaaa title

Since October 2014, I have been chronicling the good and bad fashion choices displayed on Degrassi Junior High and Degrassi High. It’s been a long, nostalgic, and sometimes boring ride, but we finally made it to the end of Degrassi High. However, there’s a bonus for us all – School’s Out. I was only 4 when this came out, but I can’t imagine the relief from getting a tiny bit of closure with the release of this film. I’ve gotta say, something about it really captures the teenage summertime. I’m so excited to dive into this with you, for one last session of old school Degrassi fashion review. Thank you all for your interest in this little endeavor. Fashion is not necessarily what I love most about Degrassi, but something just lead me to zero in on it, so here I am.

Don’t worry though, after this, I’m moving right on to Degrassi: The Next Generation. So broomheadz will be around for at least 15 more years.

Degrassi Song Search

Hey Broomheadz, today’s morning post is gonna be a bit different. I’ve got a friend on Tumblr who is doing this amazing list of all the songs appearing in classic Degrassi.

http://yokaikabuki.tumblr.com/ has created this so far. (It seems others have been helping as well, like louellasboilerroom, I don’t mean to leave anyone out!)

Yokaikabuki has made a video on the songs still unidentified. Please click the link below and see if you can shed any light on this mystery!!

Links Between DH and TNG

Time for another discussion. This time it’s about connections between old and new.

Watching the first 3 seasons of Degrassi: The Next Generation, there are many references to the good old original. Mr. Simpson talking about his band, the password “broomhead”, mentions of Tessa Campanelli, and so on.

However, after spending some time in the online Degrassi community, you will see many people asking – why didn’t the writers incorporate MORE, however subtle, references to the original? It wouldn’t have hurt anyone. It wouldn’t have messed up the story, or confused the young audience. Like, for example, somehow alluding to the fact that Mr. Perino was once Jeff on DJH!

And today, I thought of another. This morning, as I was watching TNG Season 2 episode “Girls Just Wanna Have Fun”, I realized something as Emma and Manny crashed the 80s dance.

wut

WHY didn’t the DJ play one of the songs that DJH/DH used to have playing at all their dances?! Specifically Gowan! I mean come on! I became really angry. That would have been so simple! So here, have some Gowan.

Ships. (?!?!)

I’m probably like the ONLY person in the world who doesn’t understand this “shipping” and combining of names to represent a couple. But… what is this? WTF people.

sea

People used to do that when two people spent so much time together “they were practically one person” – if Joe and Sally are so obsessed with each other that they’re never apart, people would jokingly refer to them as Jally. And then there was Brangelina, the exceptionally popular celebrity couple that got their own special name which in turn spurned a cultural disease. Ships.

So apparently, now, if you’re dating, you’re automatically Soe or whatever obnoxious name combination people can think of. And there’s no standard! If you want to call them Camaya, do it, if you want to call them Mam, do it! Be as annoying as you want!

mar

And what the hell is shipping? That’s about the stupidest thing I’ve ever heard of. And endgame? WTF does OTP stand for? Like, where am I?

cra

And what’s with the obsession with relationships in the first place?! You know, on DJH and DH, and even TNG, some people never dated at all! Or dated only a couple of people! Now everyone dates everyone and their dead brother!

jt

Back in the day, there used to be more important concerns besides dramatic relationships and careless sex!

emma

And what’s with this term fandom? That’s about annoying as shit. I hate to be lumped in with these shipping teeny boppers comprising a fandom of “omg i luv her i wish i was as pretty as her”. This, my friends, is a different type of blog, you can rest assured.

What has Degrassi – and its audience – become? Anyone else out there feeling this way?

Name Repetition

I know I’ve been sticking to fashion mostly, but since the thought crossed my mind, I thought I’d  make a “discussion” post today! The topic is name repetition in the Degrassi universe!

We all know there have been two Mayas AND a Mia throughout Degrassi… But I noticed something I found funny within DJH.

Christine Nelson….

Spike 4.2

and

Mike Nelson….

Mike 2

These two completely unrelated characters have the same last name! Why? Was it intentional? The writers could have easily made Mike named Mike Smith or something else.

And what’s more, SPIKE NELSON and MIKE NELSON rhyme!

What do you think? Anyone else know of any other name repetitions or oddities with the Degrassi universe? I have more I’ll post about later.
