Something about seeing Manny’s mom out of the house, out from under the thumb of Joseph… she looks more empowered, more autonomous, like she does her own stuff out there in the world. She comes to see Manny at school, and it reminds me of when Michelle’s mom came to see her at school, and also Caitlin’s mom. Julietta wears cropped pants and a jacket. I can’t tell for sure but these might be her work clothes – lastly we see her wearing scrubs back at home.

And here is Manny’s mom again, Julietta. She too has a look that says “disheveled yet trying my best to hold it together”. Both parents convey a lot with their attire here – like they are stressed and under pressure. Like they’ve placed their wants, needs, personalities, and self-expression to the side to work work work and do what they’re supposed to do, like earn money and raise a family. And deep down, though they’re surely worried for Manny’s safety, they’re probably also resentful that Manny is exploring life, experimenting with fashion, and trying out unconventional pursuits.

Manny’s hot mom is wearing like, a very 90s-TV-mom outfit first, in this like denim shirt and pants set. Manny breaking the news to her is just so sad. That scene always makes me cry. For the abortion she wears her hair down and a pretty wine-colored top.

Welp, today I learned that Manny’s mom has a name. Julietta! That’s a lovely name. I like Manny’s mom, I guess. But I’m not sure… What do you guys think? Here she is at the swim meet having no idea she is about to be a grandmother (psych!), wearing a horizontal-striped v-neck and a tan jacket.
