Emma Nelson is a mad scientist in this episode. Mad as in pissed. First she’s just glaring at Snake during family dinner, in a red v-neck tee. Is this perhaps the only time we ever see Emma in red? The next day, she’s actually wearing a labcoat over her heart-on shirt while she conducts experiments and gripes about Snake. As a long-time Archie Comics fan, though, I do love the reference to Betty and Veronica here in the dialogue. (No I have not seen Riverdale, leave me alone.) Fortunately she’s not wearing the labcoat ALL day, and she’s shown frowning in the halls wearing her cross-body bag. And for the big day, the science fair, Emma wears a horizontal-striped tank with some high-waisted, belted pants which I know for sure would not have been considered cool. An environmental/summer camp look maybe, but definitely not cool. And we conclude with Emma at home in her lime green floral pajamas.

Being that this episode focuses on the grade 9s, we don’t have a lot of Emma. But first, enjoy this short sleeve blue button down. And then this white hooded tank is what she wears for picture day. Kinda weird, I don’t think my mom would’ve let me wear white. When I was her age I also felt like if I smiled while wearing, white, it would make my teeth look yellow by comparison. Anyway, please note that I did create a “sleeveless and hooded” trend category on this blog because of how often I see this.

Emma is in this purpley-pink ribbed polo shirt, her hair kinda pulled half back, these slightly flared flooding pants with like, striping on the bottom, and tennis shoes with socks. I love how it’s basically acceptable to wear tennis shoes with anything in the 80s and 90s and 2000s. Wait, is it still? But let’s get onto the real content of this post, Emma dressed up like Spike, or Cyndi Lauper as she asserts. This is the 80s dance episode by the way, and Emma and Manny have decided to sneak into the nighttime dance for which they are too young. She wears a plaid skirt, an oversized shirt tied up, a vest with buttons, and crimped and teased hair in true Spike fashion. And a bunch of eye makeup that creased terribly by the end of the night. Where’s your primer and setting spray, girl?

Emma is wearing her perfect color scheme in this episode – green and browns. She wears her hair in a little twisty thing, a green and white tank, olive pants, and a tan jacket. I really liked her friendship with Craig.

I think it’s really sweet that Spike’s kid babysits Joey’s kid. Emma’s already grown so much since last season. She carries out her babysitting duties in tanks and jeans, and I think she’s gawking over Craig in this one shot of her wearing a horizontally striped polo shirt.

Emma is sporting some pigtails and wearing a long sleeve, horizontally striped pink top. On her way to the party she tops it with a denim jacket that has frayed seams all over. And I LOVE Emma forever and I think she’s beautiful, but once again, I get a kick out of the contrast between Emma and Ashley right now (because Sean is involved with both of them). Emma is a little girl still and Ashley is a straight up WOMAN. For now anyway.

Poor sweet little piggietailed Emma is about to get her heart stomped on. First she wears, cute like, half-pigtails, a blue v-neck, and a red zipup sweater. Then we see her in what seems to be the same zip up sweater under a puffy tan hooded vest, dark pants, and chunky shoes. She seems very…stiff in this episode, doesn’t she? No wonder Jay tries to give her a massage later. Then she’s at school in that horizontally striped sweater of greens and browns, under a sweater vest. Like, a hooded button down sweater vest. Then, a blue v-neck sweater. And she puts that puffy vest back over top, to provide padding for when her boyfriend shoves her on the ground.

Cabaret

Our B plot today involves Emma wanting to speak for the panthers with an interpretive dance at the lunchtime cabaret. But luck is really not on her side for this. First she can’t get a dude to participate, and then when she finally does, Manny twists her ankle. When the show goes on anyway, everyone laughs. Rough time. Anyway we kick off with a purple shirt, kind of baseball tee style, and the sleeves have horizontal striping. Next is her dance practice outfit – looks like an all black getup with a pink tiefront sweater. And a look of disgust for Toby’s inadequacy. Finally, at the cabaret, she wears all black, complete with a tail, gloves, and a panther nose.

Welcome to Wannabe – the episode where Emma is really salty about Manny developing her own storyline. First she wears this red zip up hoodie over a black shirt, her hair clipped to the side. Then she wreaks havoc in a green big-necked sweater.

We are still exploring awkward adolescence through the eyes of Emma, with minor assistance from Manny. This is the episode where Emma goes on a date with Sean. Man these were hard times. I mean, I wasn’t exactly allowed to go on DATES at age 12 myself but, ya know, my parents would like drive me to the school dance where I had a “date” with an equally shy and awkward boy. My god. The little photo they take before the date – so relatable. I’m in pain. So these pictures are out of order in the post, but first we have Emma in a nice 3/4 sleeve top and khakis. We don’t really like, wear khakis recreationally anymore do we? I don’t think anyone just puts on khakis to go with their outfits these days. Correct me if I’m wrong. I remember wearing them and I remember them really not being the most comfortable or practical. Her hair is crimped AND curled under and the wears a plastic chunky watch. Oh yeah and she has a reddish zip up hoodie too. Then we have a couple of shots of her in her dorky little gym outfit. Ugh, we all deserve an award for surviving junior high. Then it’s time for the date! Looks like she fluffed up her hair a bit to get ready. And as you may remember, we get two outfits because a bird shat on her first one. First is the blue shirt with black zip up sweater. Then she switches to a red shirt and overalls. Like, I don’t know why she’s worried about her outfit, because she just looks like she’s ready for her first day of kindergarten, definitely not gonna be seducing anyone tonight. And lastly, she gazes at Sean in her tan velour zip up and STILL crimped hair.
