Turned Out Part 1

2005

Emma time! She first appears in classic Earthy Emma tones, sporting some athleisure and her classic trusty bag. Ew, and this is where Craig and Manny randomly decide to hook her up with Derek. My soul shrivels like a raisin at the thought. How do these two jokers even KNOW Derek? They say through Jimmy. But come on. It doesn’t work. Next we see her at school wearing a 2000s skin-tight-t-shirt that says Free Spirit, as well as some cropped jeans and flats. Next up is a tie-dye tee an some jeans with patches on them. She’s resisting the temptation of Peter. Look, Peter could be seen as somewhat enticing and mysterious here in Season 5. But BRO does he take a nosedive in Season 6. More on that later.

And finally, the date. One of the most PAINFUL moments of Degrassi. I am filled with cringe. And I am also filled with rage that this was written into the show at all. It’s insulting. Manny was supposed to have recommended this? Does Manny not know Emma at all? The more I think about this the less it makes sense. I mean, look at the two of them? Emma looks like her mom made her take her little brother to the mall. Anyway, Emma looks hot but didn’t try too hard, thank goodness, because it’s not worth her effort. She wears layered camis with a jean skirt and sandals. And thankfully she is very honest with Derek and aborts the mission. IMAGINE. IMAAAAAGINE if they continued to date. I might have had to quit watching this show.

Manny is dressing super cutely and summery lately, but we don’t get to see the ‘fits really. First is this ruffly yellow tank, and next is an orange tie-dye tee. Love Manny in yellows and oranges!

 Gangsta Gangsta
Aired: 2003

The beginning of the second end, of Sean and Emma. Weird relationship, don’t really approve of it myself. But in terms of style, you reeeeeaaally are starting to see the separation between the two, as their styles completely clash, reflecting their completely different interests and lifestyles. Look, I’m not trying to say people of different subcultures can’t have a healthy relationship, but you gotta admit that a hippie dating a gangster is a stretch. First Emma wears a burgundy blouse, khaki capris, and cream colored sneakers. Next she cleans the ravine in a blue tie-dye tank and more khakis. I was just mentioning to one of my zoomer coworkers that we all used to wear khakis casually, and she was like, whaaaa? Next is her school picture, which is kinda sad, because it’s like a kind gesture that’s about to get crumpled up. Anyway she’s wearing a pinkish tee with a mandala on it. And finally, Emma is signing the picture and trying to give it to Sean, wearing her floor-length purse, a jean skirt, and a white peasant top.

Fight for your Right
Aired: 2003

I’m serving up heaps and platefuls of non-genetically-modified Emma for you today. This is another one of the very first “new” Degrassi episodes I remember seeing on TV. Emma fighting against GM foods, which grows into a larger fight against the system. One of my screenshots was corrupted so I hope that I didn’t miss anything. First Emma is seen practicing her presentation in a tie-dye tee and zip up hoodie. Then she’s walking to school with her cross-body bag, a vest over a sweater, and a hat. Her jeans have little flowers embroidered on them. Oh yeah, she also has a Kyoto button on her collar. Okay, next up is where I’m missing a file that shoes Emma is wearing a long sleeve grey tee with “GM Foods” written on the front surrounded by a circle with a slash through it. And then as you see on the back it says “1 BAD IDEA”. Her bag has lots of key chains dangling off, as was cool back in the day. Then, we are on Emma’s couch and I can’t quite make out this shirt, but it’s dark in color and long sleeved. And finally, she makes her anti-apology to the school wearing a burgundy shirt with a butterfly on it.

Relax
Aired: 2003

Who knew all these friends coincidentally had a passion and talent for floor hockey? Manny appears in tryouts as well, wearing a ringer tee, shorts, and chunky tennies, sporting braids like usual. In the halls she wears a 3/4 sleeve v-neck pinkish tie dye kinda tee. Also I want to note that her hair is parted with a ZIG ZAG part. Remember those? Next we are back in the gym and Manny wears, what do you call this, a short-sleeve baseball tee? Next we are outside in a grey zip up hoodie and flower studded earrings. Enjoy all this innocence while it lasts, my dudes. And finally, Manny twists her ankle during a game, wearing a ringer tee again. And surprise surprise, Liberty gives no sh*ts.

Message in a Bottle
Aired: 2003

Pictures you can hear. “CHEMistry!” Anyone else? Okay this is an episode starring Sean and Emma, what a waste of energy they put into this insufferable relationship. Emma is definitely getting older, you can see she’s looking a bit less childish lately. First she’s wearing a red zip up hoodie, jeans, and her cross body bag. With a little glass necklace that’s probably a dolphin or something. She’s seen the next day wearing what seems to be the exact same thing, but the hoodie is unzipped to reveal a pinkish tee. Then we are at dinner at Spike’s house. Emma is wearing a dark maroon long sleeve tee and the room is like, dimly and romantically lit. Weird. As things usually go with Sean, she has to have a wardrobe change. She comes downstairs in a black v-neck tee, grey zip up hoodie, AWESOME black and white tie-dye pants, to find that Sean escaped. Oh right, I had to get the back of her hair. THREE GD PIGTAILS. Please stop. Does this ever end. So yeah, disaster ensues, but we aren’t here to talk about the storyline. We’re back at school now and Emma is sporting the world-famous Dolphin Pants again. They’re paired with a blue 3/4 sleeve v-neck shirt and her cross body bag, and lots of pleading with Sean. Whatever dude. I took as many pairs of the dolphin pants as I could. Enjoy!

JT’s B-plot to compliment Hazel’s “hiding who you are” concept involves his gender-based shame about being good at sewing. First he wears an orange and navy ringer tee oddly matched with a Joey Jeremiah Hawaiian shirt, a chain necklace, and spiky hair. Then he wears a light blue tee with a dark blue overshirt and a backwards cap. His last shirt is an orange and blue tie-dyed tee.

Actually, you know what? I feel like this plotline didn’t reach its full potential, just like Terri’s body confidence story. The only resolution at the end of all this is that JT is ultimately “the winner” despite Sean & Toby’s jeers, because he gets to measure Emma & Manny? I wish somewhere someone could have at least stated or come to the conclusion that sewing is actually not just for girls (and neither is cooking or cleaning for that matter). Like maybe Toby or Sean could have ripped their pants or lost a button and felt like a helpless moron because they can’t even perform a simple repair on their own clothing? I wish we could have seen some kind of leveling of the playing field. I mean I think it’s great their home ec teacher was a dude and everything, but all this episode really did was touch on gender roles/stereotyping and what it does. It did not show any evolution of thought, didn’t show JT really owning his talent, and didn’t even really flat out state the truth. The truth that sewing is not just for girls.

It would have been nice to maybe show JT take pride in the skill and develop it, maybe mention it again once or twice in the show. Maybe he could have continued to have a side hustle of skirt-making.

The “resolution” to this plot was kind of sexist in itself. “Yeah I know how to sew but I get to wrap my measuring tape around girls’ hips, so there!” Reminds me of the way we try to justify men cheerleading “Well they get to grab girls’ thighs all day so who’s the real winner?” It shouldn’t be about that! Physical closeness with women shouldn’t be what makes a “female” activity cool for a male to do! Dudes should have SIMPLE PRIDE in PRACTICAL SKILLS, in being SELF SUFFICIENT. These are modern survival skills. Although I know they’re just like 13 years old and it’s a little early for such wisdom… but still. All this kinda grinds my gears. That no one actually said words to the effect of “It would be great for everyone to have these skills.”

I know Degrassi was never made to tie everything up in a nice bow, but this topic is one that I feel strongly about as a woman who was trained with basic life skills and sees men everywhere who don’t know how to make themselves a grilled cheese sandwich or clean the stains from under the toilet seat often times as a direct result from residual societal programming of outdated gender roles. Let’s all please start speaking about sewing, cooking, cleaning, DIYing, fixing, repairing, etc. as basic life skills and not gender roles. Ok thank you!

We will now resume the usual fashion-based programming.

Here we are. The Hazel episode. First she wears a pink zip up hoodie with hoop earrings, a necklace, a maroon tie-dye tank, and matching headband. She’s feeling extra bitchy today, as you can tell from her facial expressions. Oh yeah, I also wanted to show you the sticker on her binder that says “Boys Lie”. It looks like it came from one of those sticker vending machines. Next she has donned a Jamaican beanie and tee for International Day. It’s really kind of sad. I love that Degrassi touches on this topic so much – not wanting to be who you are. I’m watching Marco go through the same thing right now in Season 3. Anyway, next Hazel is in a floral button down over a black tank, revealing her true Somalian heritage, featuring photos of herself in hijabs. Hijab? Sorry.

Now it’s time for the star of the show, Manny, in her very first storyline! We begin with a daydream sequence – her half ponytail and dark jean jacket quickly transform into a pastel ballgown, gloves, curly hair, and full makeup. As you may know, she asks Craig out on a date and all that. Next we move on to the date outfit. She keeps it cute and casual – all black with the same dark denim jacket over top, and her hair in a twisty half-updo. For the review afterwards at school, she wears a 3/4 sleeve blue and white tie-dyed tee with bedazzling and a flower on it. Honestly the more I look at this last photo the sadder I get.

For once, Emma is Manny’s sidekick, supporting her through her first date process. First she’s wearing some black and white tie-dyed flares with white tennies, a white tee, and a blue vest. Then she wears a pink tee with a white zip up hoodie.
