We are still exploring awkward adolescence through the eyes of Emma, with minor assistance from Manny. This is the episode where Emma goes on a date with Sean. Man these were hard times. I mean, I wasn’t exactly allowed to go on DATES at age 12 myself but, ya know, my parents would like drive me to the school dance where I had a “date” with an equally shy and awkward boy. My god. The little photo they take before the date – so relatable. I’m in pain. So these pictures are out of order in the post, but first we have Emma in a nice 3/4 sleeve top and khakis. We don’t really like, wear khakis recreationally anymore do we? I don’t think anyone just puts on khakis to go with their outfits these days. Correct me if I’m wrong. I remember wearing them and I remember them really not being the most comfortable or practical. Her hair is crimped AND curled under and the wears a plastic chunky watch. Oh yeah and she has a reddish zip up hoodie too. Then we have a couple of shots of her in her dorky little gym outfit. Ugh, we all deserve an award for surviving junior high. Then it’s time for the date! Looks like she fluffed up her hair a bit to get ready. And as you may remember, we get two outfits because a bird shat on her first one. First is the blue shirt with black zip up sweater. Then she switches to a red shirt and overalls. Like, I don’t know why she’s worried about her outfit, because she just looks like she’s ready for her first day of kindergarten, definitely not gonna be seducing anyone tonight. And lastly, she gazes at Sean in her tan velour zip up and STILL crimped hair.

LOL I just burst into laughter after realizing how funny his face looks in this screenshot. I forgot about that. This is one of my most favorite facial expressions. LOL. Like, the “surprisingly pleased” face. Or the “not too shabby” face. Anyway so here’s Armstrong looking all coachy in this grey polo.

My god this lack of any expressive color in DTNG is pissing me off. Here’s Toby in a grey on grey long sleeve, and in a navy/grey long sleeve with that horizontal chest stripe. The other day I told my sister, “Hey, you know those shirts that boys wear with that stripe across the chest? Have you ever noticed that no one wears those anymore?” And she was all, “Huh… yeah you’re right!”

Okay so first, Spinner is in this distressed tee that almost reminds me of the Affliction trend that came later. Then, I mean, we really just have to talk about this famous hoodie. I gave it a tag, “The Ratty Hoodie”, so that I can track how often Spinner wears it. That’s part of the joke later, that Spinner “wears that hoodie too much”. I like that little plot point because I definitely got made fun of at that age for the same thing (which is weird, right? I mean, you buy clothes to wear them over and over, right?). I also like that plot point because once again, it reflects real life, that people are outfit repeaters, which doesn’t get represented on TV enough. Personally I like to make fun of this hoodie in my head, (lovingly of course), and pretend that it’s like, withered and worn and tattered, probably has some holes in it, and probably smells kind of musty. I also like to pretend it used to be white. Maybe it came from a yard sale or he found it in a trash bin on the side of the road. Anyway, so this greige, somewhat thin hoodie with super cool dragons on the front will return, so stay tuned. And lastly, Spinner has to work in the caf so he gets to don a uniform and look just like Sheila, in an orange polo, a white hairnet, and a weird wilty hairnet that doesn’t even have its elastic anymore.

I just LOVE Sheila the lunch lady. She’s amazing and definitely one of the best actors to ever grace Degrassi’s screen. I also saw her in an episode of Goosebumps and her performance was impeccable there as well. But I’ma steer the conversation back to why we’re here – the fashion. Sheila is in uniform of course, which is a white apron, a very orange polo, and a hair net.
