JT’s B-plot to compliment Hazel’s “hiding who you are” concept involves his gender-based shame about being good at sewing. First he wears an orange and navy ringer tee oddly matched with a Joey Jeremiah Hawaiian shirt, a chain necklace, and spiky hair. Then he wears a light blue tee with a dark blue overshirt and a backwards cap. His last shirt is an orange and blue tie-dyed tee.
Actually, you know what? I feel like this plotline didn’t reach its full potential, just like Terri’s body confidence story. The only resolution at the end of all this is that JT is ultimately “the winner” despite Sean & Toby’s jeers, because he gets to measure Emma & Manny? I wish somewhere someone could have at least stated or come to the conclusion that sewing is actually not just for girls (and neither is cooking or cleaning for that matter). Like maybe Toby or Sean could have ripped their pants or lost a button and felt like a helpless moron because they can’t even perform a simple repair on their own clothing? I wish we could have seen some kind of leveling of the playing field. I mean I think it’s great their home ec teacher was a dude and everything, but all this episode really did was touch on gender roles/stereotyping and what it does. It did not show any evolution of thought, didn’t show JT really owning his talent, and didn’t even really flat out state the truth. The truth that sewing is not just for girls.
It would have been nice to maybe show JT take pride in the skill and develop it, maybe mention it again once or twice in the show. Maybe he could have continued to have a side hustle of skirt-making.
The “resolution” to this plot was kind of sexist in itself. “Yeah I know how to sew but I get to wrap my measuring tape around girls’ hips, so there!” Reminds me of the way we try to justify men cheerleading “Well they get to grab girls’ thighs all day so who’s the real winner?” It shouldn’t be about that! Physical closeness with women shouldn’t be what makes a “female” activity cool for a male to do! Dudes should have SIMPLE PRIDE in PRACTICAL SKILLS, in being SELF SUFFICIENT. These are modern survival skills. Although I know they’re just like 13 years old and it’s a little early for such wisdom… but still. All this kinda grinds my gears. That no one actually said words to the effect of “It would be great for everyone to have these skills.”
I know Degrassi was never made to tie everything up in a nice bow, but this topic is one that I feel strongly about as a woman who was trained with basic life skills and sees men everywhere who don’t know how to make themselves a grilled cheese sandwich or clean the stains from under the toilet seat often times as a direct result from residual societal programming of outdated gender roles. Let’s all please start speaking about sewing, cooking, cleaning, DIYing, fixing, repairing, etc. as basic life skills and not gender roles. Ok thank you!
We will now resume the usual fashion-based programming.

Here we are. The Hazel episode. First she wears a pink zip up hoodie with hoop earrings, a necklace, a maroon tie-dye tank, and matching headband. She’s feeling extra bitchy today, as you can tell from her facial expressions. Oh yeah, I also wanted to show you the sticker on her binder that says “Boys Lie”. It looks like it came from one of those sticker vending machines. Next she has donned a Jamaican beanie and tee for International Day. It’s really kind of sad. I love that Degrassi touches on this topic so much – not wanting to be who you are. I’m watching Marco go through the same thing right now in Season 3. Anyway, next Hazel is in a floral button down over a black tank, revealing her true Somalian heritage, featuring photos of herself in hijabs. Hijab? Sorry.

Awesome, this is my first time featuring a hijab on broomheadz! But do please forgive me if I don’t know how to speak about one correctly. Introducing Fareeza, here for an important time but not a long time. And no, she is not played by Lea Michele, but dang they sure do look alike. First she wears what looks like a blue baseball tee and jeans with a grey-blue hijab. And for international day, she is wearing what looks to be traditional clothing. I tried googling this to use the right term. Is this a chador? Or is she just wearing a hijab with a matching dress? I’m not sure, so sorry. But it’s a beautiful mint green color. And finally we just have a closeup of her in more blue-grey, contently watching Hazel’s presentation about her true heritage.

This is a very important moment here. Emma’s dolphin pants, perhaps one of the most famous garments of the entire Degrassi universe, are making an appearance. These are amazing flared pants with extravagant dolphins down each leg. Of course we don’t get a good look at them, but I tried my best. She pairs them with a dark and light blue polo-style tank. Oh yeah, and I grabbed one more pic of her in a tan velour zip up hoodie with jeans and her classic cross-body bag.

Wow, Spinner has bleached his hair and we’re all just gonna act like nothing has happened! Honestly, I think this should have gotten its own B-plot. Especially since Hatzilakos did teach us in class that hydrogen peroxide yields “very blonde hair if you’re not careful”. Anyway, sue me, but I love spiked hair, I love bleached hair, I love frosted tips, I love the whole 90s-California-cool-dude kinda look, like the main association that comes into my mind is The Offspring. Spinner looks like he listens to The Offspring, and I mean that in the best way. Anyway, aside from the hair, he’s wearing a grey tee and a necklace.

Sean is spotted wearing a Canadian tuxedo and a chain, passing by with Craig. It’s a shame, did these 4 even ever get to go on a double date together?

Marco is slowly being introduced as this coveted cool guy. And honestly his clothes are and continue to be a breath of fresh air compared to some of the other dudes. For this little B plot to go alongside Manny’s disastrous date, Ellie is over here having a secret crush on Marco. This first photo, though distant and blurry, I had to include because Marco is wearing more flared jeans, cuffed to reveal these shoes that I think are some kind of like, I want to say soccer shoes, but soccer shoes are cleats… I don’t know, these are on the tip of my tongue. Are they Pumas? Anyway he wears a beige graphic tee, a necklace, and earrings including his cartilage. Next he’s seen in a yellow windbreaker vest over a grey tee.
