Manny is sporting a wicked zigzag part and braided pigtails. She wears a jean jacket, red top with ruffly sleeves, and what looks to be an athletic-style maxi skirt, not unlike one we used to see on Ashley in Season 1. Oh wait, I just got a better look at these pigtails. This is like, French braided on the top, then tied, then a handful of smaller braids are created out of the original two, and then they’re tied again at the bottom. Who did this to her. Anyway, for the next day of course, she wears same hair different hairties, along with a blue long sleeve top, and some pants that I can hardly make out though they look to have a design on them.

S2E5: Weird Science

Heck yeah, Ellie is back!! I really love when her looks are accented with purples or reds. And for only our second Ellie post ever, this one of these ‘fits is quite the legendary one imo. But let’s start from the beginning. You may recall that Jimmy has actually had a thing for El’ since the beginning. Here he is begging for her digits. She’s wearing a pleated denim miniskirt, with one of those double-row grommet belts, and a pale pink polo over a black mesh long sleeve and under a black tank. It’s such a look. And she’s Emma Nelson’s close contender in the triple-pigtail contest – she’s even adorned her ‘tails with braids and crimped and colored pieces. She wears bright purple eyeshadow, berry lip gloss, and carries a naked guitar on her back. Okay that’s normal. As you’ll see, the writers make Ellie a consistent dabbler in music throughout  her run on the show but she’s never known to stick to it. I guess I can’t really talk either though.

Next, this. Oh, this. This ensemble is captivating yet confusing, cool yet code-violating. I’m talking about, the shirt with blood dribbled down the front. Yes, this is some kind of, slightly-athletic looking white tank, with horizontal black stripes, and, blood splattered right down the sternum. Well, fake blood, but still, I can’t imagine it’s meant to simulate anything else. She’s paired it it with an awesome large print plaid skirt, and over what looks like black pants. As is tradition, every Degrassi student wears the same hairdo two days in a row, so she’s got the same hair we’ve already discussed. She’s handing Spinner her number as he employs the binder boner shield to receive it.

About this outfit. I can tell you right now I’d barely get through the door at my high school before they would send me right back home. I’ve been persecuted all my life for my clothes at school and I never wore fake blood on my shirt. That’s a whole new level. Especially in this world of so much school violence, I don’t see how this could ever fly. It’s also like, what is this shirt saying? Like, did you get a nosebleed? Did you have a little exorcist moment and vomit up some blood? Did you get stabbed in the heart? Or did you spill some ketchup? What’s the story with this blood supposed to be? What’s the message? I’m all for it, okay, like, I support you Ellie. But I’m still curious.

Okay sorry for the terrible quality but I had to snag a picture of this girl’s blue spaghetti strap dress complete with platform flip flops and tiny purse. Then a shot of some baggy-clothes boys and pencil skirts and pedal pushers on the girls. Then, some dude with spiked hair getting his picture taken. And then… Dude. Okay, this photographer really reminds me of the creeper who picked up hitchhiking Wheels. DOESN’T HE! And I’m like, perpetually pissed about the main line he delivers – “A girl as pretty as you should never frown.” WTF is that supposed to mean? That if I’m pretty I don’t have problems, or that if I frown you don’t enjoy the view which is me as much? Sit down you creeper. I’m not even gonna describe your outfit.

Paige wears a paisley-type crop top of orange and yellow, black cropped pants, and platform mules. She completes the look with little braids in her hair, tinted glasses, and her bellybutton ring on display. You’ll also see that she’s carrying that clear case as a purse again. The next ‘fit is for school picture day. It’s amazing. I love Paige in pink. She’s got her hair down, with a few random pieces curled prom-style. It’s horrendous. Like in the best day. She wears a pink jean jacket over a pink top, and frosty makeup. Oh yeah and the look has to be temporarily ruined when she most don her lab coat for science class. But she’ll make it through.

Whoa, did you ever have a moment where you feel like JT is the new Joey? He’s got a formula of shirt, overshirt, and hat, all in obnoxious colors?! Whoa. Oh yeah, I forgot, I have had this thought before, because Raditch always takes off JT’s hat just like he did with Joey. I see you, show-writers.

Hazel tried to give Ashley the benefit of the doubt initially, actually disagreeing with Paige, but before long she sided with Paige in her decision to mercilessly shame and shun Ashley after she failed inspection. Hazel is still in her like, headband and neckscarf phase. So first is a polka dot neckscarf, tinted shades, brown headband, and hoops. Then for picture day she wears a sky blue cap sleeve top, a colorful belt, a denim headband, and blue hoops. AND A… what are these called? ARM BAND? Anyway please peep that. It’s awesome, it’s straight up girl band style.

Oh my god, I can’t believe we’ve arrived here! Ellie’s first appearance! Ellie arrives and parts the drab unaccessorized sea of browns, navys, and blacks of DCS. I love Ellie’s style. Look don’t get me wrong – sometimes it’s dreadful, (like the basketball net she wears as a shirt in S4,) but I still love it, okay? She’s just, interesting as hell. Her style is, anyway. …But you know, one thing that just struck me about Degrassi alt kids is that, yeah, they dress some type of way, but they never seem to show any qualities or interests or hobbies that actually make them alternative kinds of people. Does that make sense? Like, what’s Ellie into? What’s Ashley into? Jane? Grace? < A lot of this just seems to be fashion based. They’re perfectly normal average people quite comparable in wavelength to the Paiges and Holly Js and Jennas, they just dress strangely. Like, I know alt people are normal people and everything, that’s not what I mean. I just usually think of alt people to have some sort of alternative facet to them besides their dress. I think about Faith from DJH, the goth girl who made one appearance. You went to her to ask her about astrology – she had a “weird” thing she was totally into, in addition to looking weird. Not saying that’s like, a requirement, but she’s a good example. Whoa, just remembered Eli. See, he was an alt boy who had an alt life, talents, and interests. You feel me? Idk, those are just my current thoughts. This is coming from me, someone who has journeyed through skater/punk, goth, and metal scenes/identities in her life.

What does Ellie delve into when she’s home, alone? What’s she creating, listening to, watching, reading, dreaming about? Ah yes, we do get to see her reading Edward Gorey. That’s what I’m wanting. A little look into like, not just how they LOOK different, but how they ARE different. Still, though, media plays a large part in various subcultures and I suppose Degrassi wasn’t trying to be an advertisement. We do see Ellie struggle with self-harm later, which I suppose demonstrates how she IS different. However I was kinda bummed because of course it’s the “goth” kid who cuts themselves, just like everyone expects and wants.

ANYWAY, I’m going to stop now and talk about the clothes! Ellie is wearing pigtails which are accented with black color, crimping, and small braids. She’s wearing a black mesh top under a black tee with white seams, and one of those necklaces where the spikes are beads, always making me think of teeth for some reason. She’s also got dark blue nails and dark makeup. Welcome Ellie!!!!!

It’s an Ashley episode! Oh, this is great. Okay, so this episode focuses in on the aftermath of Ashley’s ecstasy night, which at this point was several months ago. She hurt a lot of feelings and is still generally shunned from the gang, except Terri, since all Ashley said to Terri was “I love your shirt, it’s so shiny like stars!”

This first outfit is definitely another glimmer of pre-goth imo. She wears black pants, a black 3/4 sleeve tee, a black choker, and some silver jewelry. She tries to casually ease her way back into a Paige conversation but gets shut down. But she proceeds to grovel the same day and starts to get her friends back on her side.

The next outfit we see is back at Ashley’s house. She’s in a good mood, talking about how well things are going now. She’s wearing some purple pants and a grey tank.

Then it’s school picture day! Ashley’s confidence is back. She’s got her hair twisted half up and wears an orange camo tank. Another appearance of colored camo, one of my favorite little trends of this era. She’s got on dark jeans with a button fly. I threw in this shot of her in a lab coat too. It’s so sad to see her walking with her head up again, only to be crushed once more. By the end of the day, things spiral back out of control and she’s donned a Degrassi Panthers sweatshirt for the school picture, accessorized with a tear running down her cheek.

Paige “Mullet-chuk” agrees to go on a date with JT and her friends will pay her $30, so she can then get her mullet fixed. Man, where can I go to get my hair done for $30 please? I’ve just recently sworn off salons because I can’t afford that life. Anyway, her “mullet” is still clipped back and she wears a blue tanktop and little silver necklaces. For the date, it’s hilarious, she shows up in a zipup hoodie done all the way up and sunglasses to hide her identity. In the aftermath, I really like this shirt, it’s a multicolored blouse with a flower pattern.
